Korea needs most of its energy from overseas resources
Thus, it needs to find stable and efficient supply sources by participating in energy development projects, as other countries, either advance or developing ones, do.
Energy experts say that there will be no drastic drop in oil prices from the current level, as overall supply is short of demand.
Many Korean businesses, particularly big companies, have made diversified efforts for participation in development of energy resources.
As a Korean engaged in the energy business in Indonesia, I'd like to express my opinion on a desired direction to be taken by Korean energy business enterprises based on my experience particularly in the sector of coal mine development in Indonesia. I would welcome any comments and criticisms made on this opinion with the hope of improving it through joint efforts.
When can we talk about a success story?
What with current high oil prices and China’s cut down on its export of bituminous coals to Korea, bituminous coal produced in Indonesia has emerged as an attractive alternative for the nation for the geographical proximity and relatively good prices.
Many Korean business attempt to benchmark KIDECO-Samtan in Pasir, East Kalimantan, Indonesia in their search for a possibility in the business of coal mine development. I wonder whether they pay full attention to the fact that KIDECO is an old and that has been in the business in 1982 rather than one with fresh innovative ideas.
What I am trying to say is that no coal field exist that meets all requirements, such as sufficient reserves, quality, and location and transportation advantage, for Korean business.
We all know that participation in a resource development project in a foreign country is a daring adventure. Uncertainty over such a daring adventure can be reduced with good preparations, expertise and capital.
Korean business enterprises have entered the business of development of overseas resources just recently and lack their own information sources concerning local situation in foreign countries, with many of them depending on information provided by Koreans in relevant countries. Perhaps, it is too natural that they haven't been able to make a success story in coal mine development in foreign countries under such circumstances. (extracted from full presentation)
